Coventry school closed after pupil typhoid diagnosis
- Whitmore Park Primary School was closed on Monday to complete a “deep clean” which began at the weekend. It is expected to reopen on Tuesday
- Head teacher Jacqueline McGibney said the school was working with Public Health England (PHE) “who have advised us that the risk to children is low”
- PHE said the child’s infection was travel-related and an associated pupil was being tested
Gweru DCP, council on typhoid high alert
- The Department of Civil Protection (DCP) in Gweru and the local authority have partnered to fight typhoid after the city last week recorded two suspected typhoid deaths in Mkoba suburb
- City council spokesperson Vimbai Chingwaramusee said after the meeting, the local authority’s rapid response team started rolling out awareness campaigns on high standards of hygiene and the need to consume safe water

Emergency drive finds new vaccine effective against typhoid: experts
- An emergency vaccination campaign in Sindh following the outbreak of typhoid in the province has found the typhoid conjugate vaccine to be effective in preventing new cases of the disease, said researchers at an event at the Aga Khan University (AKU)
- At the same time as the campaign, researchers set up a surveillance system in the same area over an 18-month period to screen a cohort of over 20,000 children, who received the vaccine, to detect cases of typhoid. They found that nine out of 10 children in the cohort, or 89 per cent, did not contract the disease

- A new study has uncovered key details for how the Salmonella bacteria that causes typhoid fever identifies a host’s immune cells and delivers toxins that disrupt the immune system and allow the pathogen to spread
- The study identifies three subunits on a typhoid toxin protein, one of which is key for delivering the toxin into host cells
- The findings open the door to develop small molecules that block the high affinity trisaccharides and inhibit the toxin from binding to and entering the target cell

- Biological E. Ltd on Monday commissioned its manufacturing plant at the Genome Valley Special Economic Zone near here and unveiled its new Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV)
- Recently, BE received authorisation from the health regulatory authorities to license and market a new Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine
- The vaccine was developed in partnership with the GSK Vaccines Institute for Global Health, based in Siena (Italy), which first developed the asset and transferred it to BE in 2013
Filipino 1st local typhoid case in Taiwan this year
- The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Friday (Feb. 14), announced the first locally-acquired case of typhoid this year, in Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City

Child diagnosed with rare Typhoid fever at Briarwood Elementary
- On Wednesday, February 5, Briarwood Elementary School was notified by the Barren River District Health Department of a confirmed case of typhoid fever in one of their students
- Principal Lori Morris advised parents to be watchful of the following symptoms in their children: 103-104 degrees Fahrenheit fever, weakness, stomach pain, headache, diarrhea or constipation, cough, or loss of appetite
Typhoid: 90pc of children in hotspots vaccinated
- At least 90 percent of children between five and 16 years were vaccinated during the 2019 typhoid campaign in Harare’s high risk areas, including 74 percent of those aged between six months and four years
- The campaign took place in Harare suburbs of Mufakose, Hopley, Budiriro, Dzivaresekwa, Glen View, Glen Norah, Mbare and Hatcliffe, targeting 325 000 children
- Director of Epidemiology and Disease Control in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Portia Manangazira, said the mass vaccination followed evidence that typhoid was becoming endemic in recent years

- The purpose of the vaccination drive was to help traffic police, who are at risk and spend odd hours on the field to immunize them against typhoid infection
