Tackling the silent killers of children

Anita Zaidi, director of the Enteric and Diarrheal Diseases (EDD) program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, discusses the neglected, yet deadly, nature of enteric and diarrheal diseases in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Zaidi specifically highlights typhoid fever as a major cause of mortality and illness in children under age 5. However, the global burden of this disease has been largely unaddressed.

As part of its strategy to reduce the impact of enteric infections on the most impoverished, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation plans to expand investments in typhoid.
