Travel writer Henry Wismayer reflects on his experience contracting typhoid and dengue. These potentially life-threatening diseases, which still plague parts of Asia and Africa, are often overlooked by travelers who are able to afford vaccines and treatments. Wismayer, with the help of Dr. Peter Hotez, president of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, highlights both the severity of these diseases and the feasibility of eliminating them (along with other neglected tropical diseases).
