Global Action–Local Impact: Typhoid Conference Agenda

Will we see you in Hanoi?

Every two years, the Coalition against Typhoid, a program of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, hosts the only major international conference specifically focused on typhoid. The 2019 conference is approaching fast! This year’s theme, “Global Action for Local Impact,” will focus on the progress we’ve seen on global typhoid policy and how the momentum will lead to impact for improved typhoid control at the local level.

We’re already breaking records! This year, we received a record number of abstract submissions, so for the first time we will be holding concurrent oral abstract sessions. This means that attendees will have a choice of sessions, and there is an opportunity for in-depth updates in areas of focus. Oral abstract sessions include everything from updates on disease burden surveillance, introduction of the new typhoid conjugate vaccine, drug resistance, and integrated policy, to genomics, immune response, and vaccine development.

We plan to showcase major trends and updates in typhoid control and prevention during three plenary sessions:

  • Building a Multisector Toolkit emphasizes the importance of working together across sectors to design and implement integrated approaches to prevent and control typhoid.
  • The Essentials for Using Data for Decision Making and Advocacy includes advocates and policymakers working at the local, national, regional, and global levels sharing their experiences influencing evidence-based policymaking and crafting strong advocacy messages.
  • Global Actions–Local Impact, the closing plenary, focuses on typhoid elimination, leaving us with a sense of what’s on the horizon that could make major local impact in typhoid control in the near term.

Lastly, this conference includes yet another new offering. Lunchtime workshops, hosted by partners,  will be interactive sessions that dig in to specific topics, including iNTS as a neglected tropical disease, implementing the new World Health Organization typhoid surveillance standards, generating data to inform decision-makers on vaccine introduction, and crafting an advocacy message. We will also have a Salmonella 101 session for first-timers at the conference to wrap their head around the field of typhoid. Early registrants have shown much enthusiasm for these sessions already!

We are working hard to organize an exciting and informative event. We look forward to seeing you – and engaging with you on social media – in March. As a reminder, registration closes January 28. Please register today.
