Goals

The goals of CaT are to:

  • Advance a comprehensive and integrated typhoid control strategy in endemic countries through sustained advocacy, communications, consultation, collaboration, and coordination;
  • Facilitate rational, evidence-based, and sustainable decisions regarding the use of typhoid vaccines;
  • Assist countries with decision-making and the implementation and monitoring of typhoid vaccination programs and their impact; and
  • Promote research and development of next generation typhoid and new paratyphoid vaccines and improved diagnostics.
 

Aims

As part of a comprehensive and integrated approach to the control of enteric fever, the aim of the Coalition against Typhoid (CaT) is to expedite and sustain rational, evidence-based decisions at the global, regional, and national levels regarding the use of typhoid vaccines.

The CaT aims will evolve over time as next generation and new vaccines become available.

Scope of Activity

The following situations are considered within the scope of the CaT Work Plan:

  • The control of endemic typhoid fever that results from exposure to unsafe water and food, lack of basic sanitation and poor hygiene;
  • The control of outbreaks or epidemics of typhoid fever as a result of episodic breakdowns in the water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure;
  • The control of typhoid fever in populations affected by complex emergencies and natural disasters;
  • The control of typhoid fever and S. Typhi transmission in high risk occupations such as food handlers, sanitation workers, health care workers, etc.; and
  • The control of typhoid fever among travelers
