Stories of Typhoid: Meet Yadav
Meet Yadav. A 27-year-old lab assistant in Gurgaon, India, Yadav is remarkably conscientious about avoiding diseases transmitted through contaminated food and water. He cooks at home to avoid eating food bought on the street, where the risk of transmission is much higher. He drinks filtered water, and washes his hands with soap on a regular basis. Yet Yadav’s precautions could not totally overcome the risks of life in his village, which is plagued by water and sewage problems.
So despite his precautions, Yadav fell ill with typhoid. The classic symptoms hit him with full force; a high fever, constant nausea, bouts of vomiting and worst of all, body aches and fatigue. “I couldn’t sleep at night,” said Yadav. “It was very hard on me.” Read more about his story.

Outbreak Watch
- Fiji – Typhoid outbreak confirmed in several areas of the country after Tropical Cyclone Winston.
- India – Panic grips a Bijnor village after typhoid and dengue kill nine in ten days and sicken 75. In Khammam District, hospitals have treated at least 6,716 patients for typhoid. Eight children are dead in Tiruvallur as a typhoid outbreak is made worse by “quacks” providing false medicines. Villagers living near the Wariana dump report at least one case of typhoid in every household. Two children dead and 90 villagers sickened by a “mysterious fever” in Shirar. St George’s College in Mussoorie closed just before exams because of typhoid and viral fever cases.
- Kenya – Residents in Kiogoro ward are reporting cases of typhoid after their water supply was cut off.
- Nepal – Hundreds of typhoid cases in Ramechhap due to water contaminated with fecal coliform.
- Sudan – Outbreaks of disease including typhoid in the Sortony North Darfur refugee camp threaten to pose a major humanitarian disaster.
- Uganda – Several patients report being treated for typhoid in Lira.
The Dirt on Water
- Asia, Africa, and Latin America – a report by the UN Environment Programme warns that a worrying rise in pathogen pollution in surface waters could put up to 323 million people at risk of infection.
- India – Illegal access to water pipelines from unauthorized colonies on the outskirts of Gurgaon has contaminated the water supply so that 15 percent of the homes in Gurgaon are now receiving water that is not safe for drinking.
Waste Not
- Zimbabwe – The government has entered into a public-private partnership to improve the ineffective waste management system, which has exposed urban residents to outbreaks of disease. This decision comes after the capital, Harare, is officially declared typhoid-free after a spring outbreak.
